Appendicitis

by jmmiller

Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix, a small, worm-like protrusion on the first part of the colon.  The appendix is part of the immune system, so although it does serve a purpose, your child’s body will function normally if their appendix is removed.

Although it is not known why some people develop appendicitis and others don’t, it is important to recognize the symptoms of an appendix inflammation.  If your child’s appendix ruptures, they could go into shock from the spread of infection into their abdomen.  In rare cases, death occurs as a result of a ruptured appendix.

The appendix is located in the lower abdomen on the right side of the body.  Children with appendicitis may complain of an all-over stomach ache, possibly beginning around the belly button.  As the infection worsens, the pain will become severe and concentrated in the lower right abdomen.  However, if the appendix ruptures, the pain will again spread throughout the abdomen.  It is important to seek medical attention before this happens.

Appendicitis usually makes the child quite sick to their stomach, with severe nausea and vomiting.  They may develop a fever as well.  Since appendicitis can progress quickly, it is important to take the child to the Doctor as soon as possible once it is suspected.

The Doctor may perform any one of several tests to determine if the child has appendicitis.  An ultrasound, blood test, urinalysis or stomach X-ray may be done.  If the Doctor decides to do an appendectomy to remove the inflamed appendix, your child will be admitted to hospital and the surgery performed under general anesthesia.  It is a minor procedure that leaves a scar about two inches in length.

Although surgery can be a frightening prospect to children and parents, it is important to give consent immediately once appendicitis is diagnosed to reduce the chance of a ruptured appendix.
