Boosting your Toddler’s Communication Skills
by courtkneeMany parents assume that speaking and communicating with their toddler is virtually impossible until their language skills develop. However, emphasizing communication with your 2 to 3 year old can help them develop their language skills more quickly. Interactive conversation and play are all important parts of your child’s verbal and cognitive development. Here are some tips on how to communicate with your toddler in ways that will help him or her grow:
*Discuss the day’s events with your child. This can be achieved during a pre-bedtime wrap up of the day’s events. You can ask your toddler about their day and what they liked best and you can review what you did together.
*Sing to your child. Music of any kind is helpful to your child’s development. You can focus on age-appropriate nursery music or even introduce them to some of the lighter songs from the Beatles or another “adult” band. Singing not only helps you communicate through words, but it can foster a lifelong love of music for your child.
*Read to you child again and again and again. Toddlers learn the cadence and order of language when books are read to them repeatedly. Make the stories interesting by playing around with character’s voices and acting out parts of the tale.
*Pretend play. Any kind of pretend play can help your toddler develop cognitively and communicate better. So get ready to imagine lots of fun adventures for yourself and your child to explore.
