DVDs for Babies - a good idea?

by RachelTheWriter

How young is too young for TV?  According to the makers of Sesame Street, kids from the age of six months should be watching TV for learning and fun.  Entitled ‘Sesame Beginnings’, the new DVDs, due in stores from April, feature the usual range of Sesame Street characters with songs and dance.  But are DVDs for such young children a good idea or not?

Not, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, whose guidelines suggest that children under two shouldn’t be watching TV.  That’s right - no TV at all.  Why is this?  Here’s what the Academy has to say:

“Children of all ages are constantly learning new things. The first 2 years of life are especially important in the growth and development of your child’s brain. During this time, children need good, positive interaction with other children and adults. Too much television can negatively affect early brain development. This is especially true at younger ages, when learning to talk and play with others is so important. ”

So parents should think again before allowing their under twos to watch TV or view DVDs, or at least exercise moderation and set firm limits on viewing.  When it comes to your child’s health, it’s surely better safe than sorry.
