Is your kid playing the ‘choking game’?
by RachelTheWriterIt seems that some kids are playing a new and potentially deadly game with their health. The ‘choking game’ is a way of getting that high feeling without using drugs, and the death toll from the game is dramatically rising.
So what is the game? Basically the kids try and choke either themselves or each other – cutting off the oxygen supply so that they pass out. Apparently the rush of blood to the head feels good, and according to the Ohio Resource Network for Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities is played by children wanting to get high.
So who’s playing it? Children between the ages of 9 and 15. Many parents are entirely unaware that children can play these kind of risky games when adults aren’t around. So how can parents make sure that their kids are safe? It’s a difficult balance of vigilance without prying. Try to educate your child so that he or she knows that such games are dangerous – without making them sound tempting! Often a straightforward explanation can be the easiest way to approach such a problem. Let them know that children have died from these games – even if they didn’t mean to – and this should put them off.
