Preschooler Safety Tips

by courtknee

With a preschooler, life is nonstop.  Their natural exuberance for life comes through in everything they do, from eating a meal to playing outside.  And because of this, their safety may be at risk.  A preschoolers’ activity level is so high they may exert more than they are capable of.  Even though they are not new at walking, they can lose their balance easy.  While gross motor skills begin developing in the first year of life, it is not until the preschool age that these skills start to become refined.  Your preschooler is learning balance and coordination, but may not always have a grasp on either.

To protect your preschooler during physical activities, watch them closely especially if they are playing outdoors or near dangerous surroundings such as a swimming pool.  If your child is using a tricycle or bike they must be wearing a helmet at all times.  Besides being the law, using a helmet just makes sense.  The fall from a tricycle or bike could cause head injury that can effect your child for the rest of his or her life.  Additionally, you should teach your preschooler about street safety and speak to them about never crossing the street without an adult.  It is important to emphasize to your child that they are never to chase a ball out into the street.  Finally, no child should swim without adult supervision.  Water safety is of utmost important.  If you have a pool, consider getting a safety fence to protect your children.
