Water Play for your Toddler

by courtknee

Often, toddlers find water play fascinating and supervised water play is encouraged.  To have safe fun with your toddler and water try these ideas:

*Fill a bucket of water and provide a wide, soft paint brush to paint outside walls.

*Fill a dishpan with water and use plastic cups for water fun on the porch.

*Outside hoses or sprinklers can cool down a hot day safely.

*If you are bathing or showering, you can keep your toddler within your site and happy by placing a dishpan on the bathroom floor with cups or float toys to keep him or her occupied.

Most toddlers smile from ear to ear at the sight of water.  But at about 18 to 19 months, some toddlers become fearful of the bathtub because the tub is slippery and the drain worries them.  This does not usually last long.  If your child becomes afraid of the tub, be gentle and don’t battle over the bath.  Place a rubber mat on the bottom of the tub or have him or her wear water shoes.  Let your toddler play at the side of the tub with his or her toys before getting into the water.
