What to feed active kids

by RachelTheWriter

It can be difficult for mums and dads to know what to feed their active youngsters, particularly when it comes to a day out running around the park or a school sports day.  Out and about foods tend to be of the unhealthy variety, such as hotdogs and ice creams, but with a bit of advance planning you can pack a lunch for your child that’s not only tasty but good for them too.

Drinks - If your child is going to be very active, remember to pack a couple of bottles of water to quench their thirst and rehydrate them.  A pure fruit juice is also a good idea too.  You can give them a ’sports’ drink if you like - but they can contain quite a lot of sugar so limit it to one.

Fruits - Fruits are a great snack for an active kid.  Easy on the stomach, and provide a great energy boost.  Try cutting an apple or an orange into easy to hand out segments.

Vegetables - Make lunch fun with small veggies!  Baby carrots, wedges of cucumber, cherry tomatoes and celery sticks are all colourful and easy to eat.

Grains - Sandwiches are the easiest food to make for lunch.  Remember to use wholegrain bread for added health benefits.

Protein - Lean meats or nut butters are excellent fillings for sandwiches.  Proteins keep your little one full and ready to go.

Remember, be sure to keep your food fresh by storing in a cool bag, and making sure you don’t keep it directly in the heat.  Enjoy!
